Anderson's Bookshops is proud to welcome a panel of fantastic middle grade and young adult authors for a virtual event:  Melanie Sumrow (THE INSIDE BATTLE), Adib Khorram (DARIUS THE GREAT DESERVES BETTER), Mark Oshiro (EACH OF US A DESERT), Sally J. Pla (STANLEY WILL PROBABLY BE FINE), and Tanya Guerrero (HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE SEA)!  The panel will be moderated by New Jersey educator Nicole Mancini.

A panel discussion by MG and YA authors about the importance of books that examine mental health. This diverse panel will consider the need for stories that reflect matters of mental health for readers and how an ongoing discussion through the use of books (MG through YA) benefits all.

While registration is required to attend this event, you can choose from a variety of ticket costs below.  Anderson's realizes that this is a challenging time for many families.  We are offering a variety of ticket options so that you can choose what is the best fit for you right now.  Every book ticket will include a signed copy of the book (with the exception of Tanya Guerrero due to international shipping constraints), and all donations will go towards supporting our independent small business and our employees.

All book purchases will receive a signed (bookplate) copy of the chosen book.

Please note that we can only ship to US addresses!

More about the books:

The Inside Battle:
Thirteen-year-old Rebel Mercer yearns for his father's approval. His dad suffers from PTSD and spends time in their basement communicating with a racist, anti-government militia group called the Flag Bearers. He doesn't agree with his dad's ideology, but he isn't exactly speaking out against it either. Can Rebel find his voice when it's needed the most?

Darius the Great Deserves Better:
In this companion to the award-winning Darius the Great Is Not Okay, Darius suddenly has it all: a boyfriend, an internship, a spot on the soccer team. It's everything he's ever wanted--but what if he deserves better?

Each of Us a Desert:
From award-winning author Mark Oshiro comes a powerful coming-of-age fantasy novel about finding home and falling in love amidst the dangers of a desert where stories come to life

Stanley Will Probably Be Fine:
This funny and moving second novel from the author of The Someday Birds features comic trivia, a safety superhero, and a super-cool scavenger hunt all over downtown San Diego, as our young hero Stanley Fortinbras grapples with his anxiety—and learns what, exactly, it means to be brave.

How To Make Friends with the Sea:
A middle grade debut novel set in the Philippines about a young boy's challenges with anxiety while his mother fosters an orphaned child with a facial anomaly.

About the Authors:

Melanie Sumrow received her undergraduate degree in religious studies and has maintained a longtime interest in studying social issues. Before becoming a writer, she worked as a lawyer for more than sixteen years, with many of her cases involving children and teens. Her first novel, The Prophet Calls, was published in November 2018. Melanie lives in Dallas with her husband, daughter, and one very spoiled dog.

Adib Khorram lives in Kansas City, Missouri. When he isn't writing, you can probably find him trying to get his hundred-yard freestyle under a minute, learning to do a Lutz jump, or steeping a cup of oolong. His debut novel, Darius the Great Is Not Okay, earned several awards, including the William C. Morris Debut Award, the Asian/Pacific American Award for Young Adult Literature, and a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor.

MARK OSHIRO is the Hugo-nominated writer of the online Mark Does Stuff universe (Mark Reads and Mark Watches), where they analyze book and TV series. Their debut novel, Anger Is a Gift, was a recipient of the Schneider Family Book Award for 2019. Their lifelong goal is to pet every dog in the world.

Sally J. Pla is the author of the acclaimed novels The Someday Birds and Stanley Will Probably Be Fine. She has English degrees from Colgate and Penn State and has worked as a business journalist and in public education. She has three sons, a husband, and an enormous fluffy dog and lives near lots of lemon trees in Southern California.

Tanya Guerrero is Filipino and Spanish by birth, but has been fortunate enough to call three countries home: the Philippines, Spain, and the United States. Currently, she lives in a shipping container home in the suburbs of Manila with her husband, daughter, and a menagerie of rescued cats and dogs. In her free time, she grows her own food, bakes bread, and reads.
