Full Title:
“The State of Technology on the North Shore”

Sponsor: North Shore Community College

Description

Join North Shore Technology Council for our second annual look into the markets, advances, and opportunities for growth in the technology industry on the North Shore. Student researchers from Endicott College’s Angle Center for Entrepreneurship will share findings about the state of the life sciences, IT, advanced materials and medical device industries. They’ll look back at last year’s results and will share how far we’ve come and what still needs work. They will also do a spotlight review on Gloucester. Steve Winter, Principal Economic Development Planner at the Metropolitan Area Planning Council will offer insights into broader demographic and technology trends and lead a discussion on what’s needed next to support and benefit the region’s technology sector.

About our Moderator:

Steve Winter, Principal Economic Development Planner for the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, provides strategic direction and coordination to interdisciplinary teams of planners and municipal staff from across metropolitan Boston and from partner organizations to build and implement regional projects throughout that focus on economic development.
Mr. Winter is developing projects that use an economic development lens to understand and address regional issues such as employment, transportation and housing, accessible public post-secondary education, life science and innovation industry clusters, and the creation of business development and research districts. He has been a partner in the development N2 Business District, a unique public/private partnership that involves two municipalities and the Newton Needham Regional Chamber. His research interests include the addressing impacts of robotics and AI on the workplace, and the economic implications of unequal application of school suspension as a disciplinary method between racial groups—suspensions that cause students to miss many instructional days.
By partnering with local post secondary institutions such as the University of Massachusetts Boston, the Northeastern University School of Law, North Shore Community College, and Endicott College he has built regional capacity to address wealth-building within immigrant communities as a critical component of a healthy regional economy.

Student Speakers

Eric Owens: Eric is a sophomore majoring in Biology/Biotechnology and minoring in Environmental Studies. He is also a member of the Endicott Honors program taking advanced interdisciplinary elective courses. Eric runs cross country at Endicott and sings in the Endicott Singers. The Endicott Singers recently filmed an episode of the PBS show, “Sing That Thing!” Eric likes to spend his days outdoors when the weather is nice. Originally from Manchester, Vermont, Eric hopes to find a career in environmental science upon graduation in May 2019.

Abigail Keim: Abigail is currently a sophomore at Endicott College double majoring in Biology/Biotechnology and Psychology. She is from Williston, Vermont and spends her free time at home running, hiking, cross country skiing and horseback riding. Abigail is also a captain of the Endicott Cross Country Team and spends lots of time on campus running as well! After Endicott, she hopes to go on to graduate school or possibly medical school. Abigail is aiming for a future career in health science research, hopefully in the areas of epigenetics or neurodegenerative disease.
