This September, amongst the excitement of football tailgates, kids heading back to school, and the weather turning to welcome the beginning of fall, the Miller Community Center will be opening its doors for the 6th annual Seattle ZeroLandfill event. On Friday, September 29th, the gym will be taken over by members of the local Seattle City Center group of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) for a day of dropping off a wide assortment of materials ranging from bolts and memo samples of fabric, to carpet, tile, glass, and wood. The gym will be packed full!
On September 30th, we will be opening the doors to the community from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
Did we mention this is FREE? All you need to do is bring some bags, boxes, or little red wagons to load up with treasures for you to repurpose into creative crafts, artwork, DIY projects, and home improvements. Our goal is always to have as little left as possible so that it can be given new life BY YOU, and avoid being dumped into the landfill. Our track record over the past 5 years has been fantastic, but we challenge you to come out and help us top it. This event is perfect for artists, crafters, homeowners, and educators. There is truly something for everybody.
Returning for the third year, we will have Seattle ReCreative set up in our Kids Corner for a supervised craft project from 10:00am to noon and again from 12:30pm-2:30pm. Their mission is to promote creativity, community, and environmental stewardship through creative reuse and art education. Last year alone they served over 700 children in their classes and workshops, donated over $800 worth of materials and services to local schools and nonprofits, benefited from over 2,500 hours of volunteer labor, and diverted more than 42 tons of creative materials from the waste stream in collaboration with Ballard Reuse. We are lucky to have them back! They are a hit with the kiddos and it is always fun to see what they come up with, while utilizing the materials we have donated by the local design community.
Make sure to also stick around for an epic performance in the afternoon by local band, Soul Sensation, who will be bringing us everybody’s favorite soul and funk songs straight out of the 70’s. It’s guaranteed to be a good time!
Don’t forget to also let us know what you make with all of the awesome stuff you pick up. We love seeing photos of carpet and tile installs, DIY projects, and arts and crafts. If you can dream it up, you can find what you need at ZLF and we want to see what your creative minds (and let’s be honest, Pinterest) inspire you to make. Find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and share away! Don’t forget to use the following hashtags so we can find you: #sortNsave #ZLF2017 #ZLFcreations
We’ll see you there!
