Background
Lights! Camera! Sparkle!
It's that time of year again- time to celebrate the festival of lights: Diwali!
Diwali is a multi-day celebration; a celebration which includes festivities to commemorate bonds between siblings, spouses, and families.
For Queer Youth and Adults, celebrating Diwali with family and joining in get-togethers can come with many considerations and questions - considerations and questions of family acceptance of one’s orientation or gender expression or family acceptance of one's same-sex partner or significant other - and this can be a complex dynamic.
Many queer young adults feel apprehensive about family get-togethers for questions or pressure of marriage. Often, LGBTQ adults must navigate festivities with a family that is modeled a little differently than most others. Queer people often celebrate Diwali without seeing people like them, or families like theirs, and this isolation can be difficult. Queer youth often feel like they are the only ones in their communities or regions and feel left out. But never fear! Rangoli is here!!! And you are not alone!!! :)
Event Description
Rangoli is a program to show our Queer Youth, Queer Desi Community, and Mainstream community the fabulous talent and vibrance of the Queer Desi Community and its Allies and to show that we exist across the continent! In our Queer Desi community we often do not find enough sufficiently visible role models and beacon's of hope and vitality. In this program, the majority of our cast identifies as Queer and we are also presenting amazing Allies with ties to the Queer Community who are performing and presenting as well. Rangoli will showcase several highly-accomplished and professionally-trained both Queer and Allied artists & leaders who are spread across North America. We are celebrating Queer identity, unity, and integration with the mainstream with our Queer Desis & Allies of all ages, across the continent! And we intend to make this an annual celebration!
This Diwali, we will light up your screen with performances ranging from traditional artforms including Hindustani Classical Music and Odissi Dance to Fusion Bharatanatyam and Bollywood Songs.
We will also give you the opportunity to learn something new at our interactive workshops on arts & crafts, food preparation, and even Pranayam for calm & peace - all brought to you by professional food and crafts bloggers & experts, as well as a licensed Yoga instructor! Attendees can also post questions in the chat box for presenters to answer.
We will end with the option for attendees to turn on their cameras and audio and have a chance to meet the Rangoli team & co-attendees at our celebration! Please be advised, we respect our attendees' privacy and discretion and attendees can keep audio and video off for the entirety of the event if they prefer.
