HISPANIC (?) WHITEBOY
Playwright & Performer: DANNY CHICON-RAMIREZ
College freshman Oscar Montoya de la Rosa Estabon Ricardo Alvarez Santana Sicilian
Ramirez.... Or Wao as his friends and family call him, is anything but “in touch” with his
Dominican and Puerto Rican roots. He doesn’t speak Spanish, doesn’t eat his cultures’ foods,
and doesn’t even know if he should call himself Hispanic, Latino, Latinx, or Caribene! When a
failing grade in Spanish class reveals itself, his normally tough-as-nails professor gives him a
chance to save his GPA (and his behind from his mother) by writing an extra credit essay that
answers the question “What does it mean to be Hispanic?”. Through the help of some larger than
life family and community members, Wao explores how expectations and assumptions can affect
others, while also discovering what his ethnicity means to him, in this one person show comedy.
Danny Chicon-Ramirez is a NYC based, Hispanic/Latino playwright and actor whose work
explores themes of identity, belonging, and free will. Throughout his career, Danny has written
and performed for theater companies such as Abrons Arts Center, The Oye Group, and Keen
Teens, while also producing a number of independent film projects. In his newest one person
show, Hispanic (?) Whiteboy (not yet premiered), Danny dives into a question he has faced
throughout his life of “What does it mean to be Hispanic/Latino?”. Analyzing how expectations
can mold others without their knowledge, he also investigates the importance of understanding
one’s ethnicity and carrying on the legacy of ancestors, while remaining true to self.
