DC--A Taste of Northern Spain

Most of Spain’s finest wines come from Northern Spain! In Northwestern Spain the two most significant wine regions, Galicia and Castilla y Leon, are located on the banks of the Duero and the Ebro. The two most dominate grapes in Galicia are Albarino and Mencia. Albarino is a white grape varietal with an intense aroma and bracing acidity which makes it good for seafood. Mencia is the grape that most red wines are made from in Galicia. Castilla y Leon is the largest of all of Spain’s regions and is home to about 60% of Spain’s artistic and cultural heritage! The main grape varietal here is Tempranillo. In Northeast Spain there are four main wine regions; La Rioja, Navarra, Aragon, and Catalunya. One fun fact about Rioja is that for about 2,000 years wines were made traditionally by growing grapes on freestanding bush vines. These grapes would then be pressed by foot in stone troughs. It wasn’t until the 1850’s that this tradition ended because of new technology which included high quality oak vats for fermentation. We welcome you whether you are an entry level wine drinker or a well-traveled wine connoisseur. The 6 to 8 wines we will sample are carefully hand selected by our premier wine buying team. Please, consider joining us in the midst of a busy week to unwind and take a break from the routines of your normal day to sample some amazing wines while listening to an incredibly well informed speaker about regions and varietals you may not yet have visited or tasted.
