This latest Buzz Session is all about standing up to "it" (whatever that "it" is for you). It's about listening to that voice that tells you "don't give up now" or finding your voice to tell others what you need.

In trying new things, we're bound to stumble as we learn. If we ask more or different things from those we know, odds are that we'll get disappointed. When we put ourselves out there, we need resilience to deal with those who may not embrace our new paths.

Enter Annie Enneking - actor, stage combat expert, musician - as she leads us through a unique session at the renowned Guthrie Theater. She will lead us through a "contest of generosity" as you experience the unique art of stage combat. You will learn fun and basic stage techniques of choreography for a convincing slap, punch and fall. This is an on-your-feet experience with safeguards and watchful instruction designed to ensure that no one gets hurt. Annie will also share her story of her unconventional multi-faced career - hers is no typical office job.

While what you learn will be "just theater" you never know what strength it will give you........especially when surrounded by other women.

So, join us! Create connections with other women who are changing their path, laugh a bit, surprise yourself, and walk away buzzing to do more.

About Annie

Annie's path was unconventional - and pretty incredible. Read about it here.

Annie Enneking is a musician, actor, and fight director. After thirty-five years as a performer, she has acted and/or created stage combat on most every stage in the Twin Cities. She quit theater for a while in her twenties to focus on dance, and toured professionally with Danny Buraczeski's JAZZDANCE and with Shawn McConneloug and Her Orchestra. Annie is an Associate Instructor and recognized Fight Director with Dueling Arts International. Her passion for stage combat is the meshing of her love for both acting and dance. She is a teaching artist in various capacities (writing, acting, combat) at the History Theatre, the University of Minnesota, The Children's Theatre, The Guthrie, and Park Square Theater. She fronts and founded the rock band Annie and the Bang Bang, with whom she has recorded three albums. She lives by the river with her two daughters (both writers and thinkers) and her husband, a firefighter and writer.

The Art of Stage Combat

The art of stage combat calls us to be the most generous people we can be, and to take really good care of another human being. It asks that we are good partners: fully present, asking for what we need, and maintaining safety measures so that we can create the illusion of violence, making stories with our bodies. In this workshop, we'll play with the basics of stage fighting, moving in slow motion to create slaps, shoves, (non-contact) punches, and hair pulls. We'll focus on how the body flows, principles of "stickiness," and how to use weight shifts to sell the action of the scene, which we'll create from the techniques we have learned!
