Broken Windows
Written by Chuck Orsland
The play takes place in South Brooklyn in the early 1990's.
Two brothers have taken different paths. Sean
“Sully” Sullivan practices criminal law, often on behalf of his best
client and older brother Donnie Boy, a troubled Vietnam veteran, who has
become a low-level scourge of the neighborhood due to his drinking and
carousing.
With the City embarking on a new Broken Windows policing strategy, Sully increasingly relies on his prosecutor friend, Mel Whitley, to allow Donnie Boy to plead to minor offenses and perform community service. But when Donnie Boy drunkenly strikes a police officer, he faces serious jail time. However, the young officer, Vick Donagher, taken by Donnie Boy’s loopy charm and status as the local tragic hero, agrees to let him plead to a less serious charge. But the plea is threatened when Father Teddy Kourakis, a neighborhood priest who is Donnie Boy’s friend and fellow vet, is assaulted, apparently by a resident of a local homeless shelter.
In the wake of the assault, Donnie Boy extracts street justice, resulting in his own arrest and prospect of state prison. Sully and Mel are forced to walk a fine line in serving the ends of justice while protecting a friend, a task made more difficult as Donnie Boy makes a stark revelation about his Vietnam experience, and Father Teddy offers new information about the night of his assault.
