Black History Month Programs

Black History Month programs – Feb. 2-28

Mini-Musical – 11 AM & 1 PM

Peach State Flyer! Hop on board the Peach State Flyer steam train and learn about the important contributions African Americans have made to Georgia and our country.

Storytime – 1:00 PM

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the contributions that African Americans have made in Science, Arts, and Sports! Join us for our special Black History Month Storytime.

Music & Movement – 2:00 PM

Visitors will learn the classic gospel song, and civil rights anthem, This Little Light of Mine as well as dance the Lindy Hop, which surged into popularity during The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920’s

Super Spectacular Science Show – 4 PM

Every afternoon, Professor Lab coat shares a fascinating science demonstration with the whole museum! Join him to see what kind of fun he and his assistants have cooked up! Questions are encouraged at the end of the show.

Science Bar – open 11 AM – 3:30 PM

Science is everywhere, but it’s especially on the mezzanine at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta! Step Up to Science is our new STEM exhibit area, and it features interactive exhibits that will teach children about light, robotics, and the way their bodies work! Kids and adults can also saddle up to the Science Bar. Staffed by a STEM educator with a whole menu full of fun activities and a whole head full of knowledge, the Science Bar is where questions turn into answers!

Art Studio – open 10:30 AM – 3:30 PM

Sculptures  – Create clay sculptures as you learn about art sculptures from the African-American graphic arts and sculptor Elizabeth Catlett. She was best known for her depictions of the African-American experience in the 20th century, which often had the female experience as their focus.

X-Ray craft – William G. Anderson was a famous African American doctor who served as the president of the American Osteopathic Association for twenty years. Visitors will make a pretend X-Ray to honor William’s work as a surgeon.

Musical Instrument – Celebrate Richard Wayne Penniman (a.k.a. “Little Richard”) by making a take-home musical instrument. 

Build It Lab – open 10:30 AM – 3:30 PM

Learn about African American inventor Alexander Miles and use pulley systems to build your own elevator.
