Ryan Su, founder of Greenzone and 9mm, is an innovative genius who introduced the idea of military culture into the 9MM Energy Drink and introduced the drink into the United States, with a lower sodium content than most energy drinks that is also packed with vitamin C. Q: In the military, which capacity did you serve in and for how long?

A:  I served two years as a United States Army dismounted mechanized infantry and one-year in military intelligence.  My job title was heavy anti-armor weapons specialist.  

Q: When did you return to the US?

A: I returned to the U.S. in January 2015.

Q: What were some of the challenges you faced upon your return and how did you overcome them?

A:  When I first came back from the military, I was socially isolated and emotionally numb.  I was also angry all the time and I was not able to handle relationships.  At that time, I was also facing divorce from my then wife.  I left my house with nothing and was homeless for two weeks, moving from one place to another.  I had thought about killing myself once.  The only thing that kept me going was the thought of my parents and my baby girls as well as the infantry quote, “better to fight for something than live for nothing.”

Q: How did the idea of 9MM come about and when did you launch?

A: I was doing research for the energy drink business and came upon the 9MM Energy Drink on the internet.  The shape of the can seemed like a perfect match for the military culture that I was in and also perfect for the military markets.  I reached out to the company that manufactures the drink, which happened to be in Europe, and worked hard on securing a contract with them for distribution rights in the United States.

The 9MM Energy Drink was launched here in the United States in 2015 under veteran-owned business GreenZone Distribution Inc. founded by myself as CEO and President, Chief Operating Officer John Lin, and Executive Vice President Kwok Lee.

Q: What makes 9MM different from the rest of the energy drinks on the market?

A: The difference between the 9MM Energy Drink and the other energy drinks on the market is its low sodium content. Also, the 9MM Energy Drink is the only energy drink that has vitamin C along with other vitamins in it.  The vitamins can help the body absorb the caffeine better.

Q:  What's your favorite flavor?

A: I personally love the original gold flavor.  It has a smooth taste and is perfect with alcohol.  (DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE PLEASE).

Q: What are some of the events you're going to be partnering within the near future?

A: GreenZone+9MM we will be attending and supporting veteran community events as well as E-sport/gaming.  Also, we will be working with some of the YouTubers who love and support our veteran communities.  Our goal is to help those people who were like me, who have experienced their darkest point in life, get back on their feet so they can help others as well.
