Donovan's business career started in 1982 as the Automotive Merchandising Manager with Kmart. As his career advanced, he worked as an Area Manager for a National Hardware Company. Soon after, he was offered a job by Lowe's Home Center , a company with long-term career opportunities. He accepted an entry-level position with Lowe's in April 1986. At 24, he advanced to store manager in Glasgow, KY, in less than two years. By 29, he was named the youngest District Manager in the company's history. He managed the Central Kentucky area in this capacity. He directed 12 stores with combined sales of $240,000,000 while supervising over 2,400 employees. After many accomplished years of service and a 16-year career, he retired in January 2001 to pursue other business interests. In February of 2001, he accepted a position with a marketing company as the Regional Market Manager over Kentucky and parts of West Virginia. In 2002, he was approached and offered the role of District Manager with Ferrellgas, a national propane sales and distribution company. He went from managing one district to four districts within eight months, earning several awards and creating record sales. A year after employment, he was promoted to Regional Operations Manager managing and leading operations in 26 plants in four states. In January 2004, he left Ferrellgas to accept the City Manager position for Pikeville, Kentucky. Under his leadership, Pikeville has become one of Kentucky's most progressive rural communities. Donovan has received several accolades and awards. These included being named the 2010 " City Official of the Year " by the Kentucky League of Cities, the 2011 " Eastern Kentucky Leadership Public Official of the Year " by the East Kentucky Leadership Foundation, the 2014 " Excellent in Leadership " by both the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce: and the 2021 "Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Businessman of the Year." In June 2017, he accepted the position of Assistant Chief Executive Officer for Pikeville Medical Center. A few months later, he also assumed the role of the Chief Operating Officer. In January 2018, Donovan was offered the position of Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer by the Pikeville Medical Center Board of Directors, which he respectfully accepted. In various leadership positions, Donovan also serves on numerous boards and committees on local, state, and national levels, both past and present.
