AT A GLANCE
This is a bucket list trip for you cultural adventurers! Mexico City has so much to offer all year round, but there’s only one place on the planet like Mexico City during Dia De Los Muertos (aka Day of The Dead), and we plan on experiencing all it has to offer! We’ll be going on all kinds of adventures; hot air ballooning over ancient pyramids, Lucha Libre (Mexican wrestling) matches, Dia De Los Muertos celebrations with our faces painted, a tour of Frida Kahlo’s home, and of course a taste of the local cuisine and tequila. We’ll be staying in the heart of the city and going on adventures each day, including a day for you to explore on your own.
ITINERARY
WHAT TO EXPECT
Day 1 - OCT 28
ARRIVAL IN MEXICO CITY
You should plan on arriving at the hotel sometime between 3:00- 6:00 pm. At 7:00 p.m. we will gather in the hotel lobby to make our way to the famous Mexico Arena for "Catedral de la Lucha Libre" a night of Mexican wrestling. We’ll choose our favorite wrestler and cheer as loud as we can so the entire arena hears us. After the wrestling we’ll go get tacos before heading back to the hotel.
Day 2 - OCT 29
BALLOON IN TEOTIHUACAN - PYRAMIDS OF TEOTIHUACAN - BASILICA OF GUADALUPE
We’ll get a very early start to the day and departure at 05:00 to the archaeological zone of Teotihuacán, where we will have a reception of coffee and cookies while we watch how they inflate and prepare everything for the balloon flight. We’ll fly over Teotihuacán (45 min approx) and celebrate the flight with a small toast. We’ll have a regional breakfast and continue to Teotihuacán to visit the pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, the Citadel with its temple to Quetzalcóatl, the Avenue of the Dead and the Temples of the Jaguar and the Snails. After lunch we’ll go to the Basilica of Guadalupe, the second of the sanctuaries most frequented by the Catholic faithful in the whole world, located on the Tepeyac hill. At night we will have a dinner at Villa Maria, a typical Mexican restaurant where we will enjoy local dishes.
Day 3 - OCT 30
DAY OF THE DEAD PARADE - DOLORES OLMEDO
After breakfast at the hotel. We will experience the famous day of the dead parade, and all the jaw-dropping costumes and music, in addition to having our faces painted as catrín or catrina. The parade takes place in the Historic Center to the Angel of Independence. We have a special place allocated for us to view the parade. In the afternoon we will make out way to the south of Mexico City to visit the Dolores Olmedo Museum, which exhibits a very symbolic and traditional Day of the Dead offering. At night we will have dinner at Zaranda where we will enjoy Bajio-style seafood.
Day 4 - OCT 31
XOCHIMILCO – COYOACAN – MIXQUIC
We’ll make our way to Xochimilco to enjoy a ride on a traditional boat called "trajinera" in Xochimilco in the south of the city. We will see the beautiful natural channels which will lead us to where the Aztecs lived, formerly known as Tenochtitlán. After our boat adventure, we’ll go to Coyoacán where we’ll get to see Frida Kahlo’s home and tour the center with her church.
