Community. Communion between audience and performers. Inspiration, anticipation, spontaneity; SHARED transcendent moments. Do you miss these things? I sure do! The Virtual Dream Café (VDC) attempts to recreate this atmosphere, via Zoom, until live music venues are able to reopen.
"Riveting Roots" is the name of VDC's second show. VDC's guest performers, Jack Williams and Still on the Hill, perform original songs, steeped in music from their roots, and you will not be able to turn away from their riveting lyrics, music, and performances!
About the Performers:
- Jack Williams is considered a "musician's musician," an uncommonly unique guitarist, a writer of vivid songs with a strong sense of place, and a storyteller in an old Southern tradition who further illustrates each tale with his guitar. His music is rooted in his native South Carolina, shaped by a long career of playing folk, rock, jazz, R&B, classical and the popular music of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. He is counted among the most dynamic performers on today's folk circuit.
From acclaimed appearances at the Newport, Boston, Philadelphia, Kerrville, New Bedford SummerFest Folk Festivals, Jack’s musicianship, songs, stories and commanding presence have established him as an uncommonly inspiring and influential performer. With eleven CDs of original music under his belt, Jack also has had his songs recorded by a slew of artists ranging from Tom Jones to Lowen & Navarro. In addition to his solo career, as a guitarist he has accompanied such luminaries as Tom Paxton, Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary), Mickey Newbury and Harry Nilsson. http://www.jackwilliamsmusic.com/ - Still on the Hill is Kelly and Donna Mulhollan, a national and international touring duo from Arkansas, described as “Ambassadors of the Ozarks” for the work they do to preserve a rich culture that is quickly disappearing. Different than most singer-songwriters, this dynamic duo embellishes their songs with a host of unique instruments from the hills they call home. Many of these were hand-made by old-timers and have amazing stories that go with them.
Still on the Hill has proved a favorite at prestigious festivals and venues, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival, and countless others. They have produced eleven widely acclaimed CDs, including “Ozark Project” (2010), which created waves across the region that are still resonating today. Many of their albums are like riveting short story collections, but told in song. Their charm and dedication radiate through every performance. http://www.stillonthehill.com/ - Chicago-based singer/songwriter Sue Fink enchants audiences with her whimsical perspective on the world, through her compelling songs and charming performances. Her genre, “urban campfire cabaret,” is folk with a hint of jazz, a large dollop of humor, and a drop of sadness for good measure. Her songs receive airplay locally and nationally, including "The Midnight Special" (WFMT) and "Folk Festival" (Lilli Kuzma, WDCB); most recently, her “Alternate Universe” song was included in Episode 691 of This American Life (NPR).
Sue performs solo, as CatBird (duo with Jane Godfrey), and as SongSisters (trio with Amy Dixon-Kolar and Patti Shaffner). As host of the Virtual Dream Café, Sue appears in the round with very talented performers whom she feels everyone should get to know. http://suefink.com/
About the show format:
- "In the round" means we each perform a song, one after another. Performers are inspired by each other's songs, and spontaneity abounds!
- This show runs from 7:30-8:45-ish, likely 4 rounds.
- "Doors open" at 7:15pm (CST), so we can chat before the show begins. (Because we're using Zoom, performers and audience will be able to see and hear each other! Audience will be muted during the show, for sound clarity issues, but we can talk before and after the performance.)
- This will be an intentional show: we ask you to donate to reserve your seat, and then be present so we can share community. The show will NOT be recorded for later viewing. The intent is for us to share the magic together, in real time.
- Your generous $donation goes directly to these artists. Your donation also reserves your place in the "Zoom room," so to speak. We look forward to sharing music, and community, with you!
