Next month will mark the fifteenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. For the families and friends of all victims, for all those who watched with disbelief ...the falling of the World Trade Center, the anniversary will recall a tragic moment in our nation’s history, and a tremendous momentum of support in the aftermath. To mark the milestone anniversary, the Catholic Community of Saints Peter and Paul, a local church on the waterfront of Hoboken across the river from downtown Manhattan, has teamed up with schools in Hoboken to prepare a Memorial Concert to be performed at 4PM on the afternoon of September 11, 2016.
With contemporary and inspired music sung by youth choirs from Hoboken High School, Stevens Institute of Technology, Mustard Seed School and the orchestra, singers and choir of Saints Peter & Paul Church, music director and composer Matthew Still is aiming to remember, to heal and to uplift: “For many local residents, the devastation of lower Manhattan was more than images on a television screen: it was the acrid smoke in the air, the taste of tears for lost acquaintances, the noise of first responders’ trucks rushing through our streets. With this Memorial Concert we also seek to heal using our senses, with visual recollection and a variety of orchestral and choral pieces” he explains.
Monsignor Robert S Meyer, pastor of Saints Peter and Paul, expressed support for the initiative: “Hoboken has always remembered the victims of September 11 with an ecumenical religious service which once again will be held earlier in the afternoon. This hour-long concert at 4PM is a way for people to mark this special anniversary with respect, togetherness and a sense of hope and healing through this uplifting and inclusive musical program”.
To accompany the concert, “The Jersey Side” 9/11 Project, a photo exhibit by photographer Sandra Swieder will be presented inside the venue. In the aftermath of the attack, Swieder documented the response on the New Jersey side and her photos have previously been exposed.
The concert will be free with donations accepted to cover the costs. It will be held at Ss Peter and Paul Church, 404 Hudson Street, Hoboken, NJ on September 11, 2016 at 4 PM, Further information for the general public and the media can be found online at spphoboken.com.
