Invisible Threads: A Grieving Mother's Search for Truth, Healing, and Connection by Maureen Walgren:
What began as an ordinary day on January 11, 2017, quickly became every parent’s worst nightmare for Maureen and Doug Walgren when their 16-year-old son, Corey, died under shocking and tragic circumstances that left an entire community searching for answers. Invisible Threads explores the unusual events surrounding Corey’s death, unraveling the questions, rumors, and truths that surfaced in its aftermath.

In the days, months, and years that followed, Maureen and Doug along with their two surviving children faced unimaginable grief and devastation. Invisible Threads takes readers on their journey through heartbreak and healing, tracing the winding path of what it means to survive—and ultimately find meaning—after profound loss.

The tragedy drew widespread attention in their community and beyond. The Walgrens endured a malicious internet troll who preyed on their pain and a serious HIPAA violation by curious hospital staff where Corey died. The memoir chronicles their two-year legal battle against the local school district and police department—whom they believe literally scared Corey to death—and their fight to ensure that no other student would face such fear over a disciplinary incident.

Their story was covered by The Chicago TribuneThe Los Angeles TimesThe Associated Press, and ABC World News Tonight with David Muir. Maureen recounts how Corey was detained at school by the dean and a school resource officer, interrogated without a parent present, and how he ran—and never came home. The Walgren’s eventually found purpose: the founding of a nonprofit dedicated to safer, more compassionate school practices and the passing of Illinois House Bill HB2627—Corey’s Law—to protect students in similar situations.

At its heart, Invisible Threads is a story about love, resilience, and the enduring power of connection. Despite the grief that often tears couples apart, Maureen and Doug chose to heal together. Their relationship deepened as they rebuilt their lives with intention and purpose. It’s one mother’s candid and emotionally raw account of loss, healing, and hope and her discovery of how her son’s life continues to touch countless others, bound together by invisible threads that stretch far beyond what the eye can see.
