If you are a fan of comics and pop culture, then come to East LA’s Comic-Con, arriving at the El Gallo Plaza on May 29. Founded in 2016 by a team of comic and pop culture enthusiasts from East Los Angeles, the East LA Comic-Con promises to be the first event of its kind in the area. Peter J Mellini, the creator, owns a shop called Nostalgic Books and Comics in San Gabriel, CA. Mellini promises that the event will be a memorable pop culture affair that will help cultivate the love for comics in the East LA area.
Peter Mellini’s Story
Mellini himself grew up in East-LA and still resides there. After putting on several events and book signings at his store, he decided that East LA needed its own large-scale comic book event. Mellini partnered up with Rudy Orozco, a graphic designer who also works as an architect, and a long-time friend of Mellini’s. The two have known each other since junior high. They met because they were part of the same comic book club. Their other partner, Enrique Cruz, is an artist that used to make comics with Mellini when the two were in high school together.
The Inspiration for East LA’s Comic-Con
With the recent upswing in the popularity of comic book conventions, Mellini came up with the idea to put on a similar convention in his area. Mellini himself has visited many other Comic-Cons, mostly in San Diego, and saw the need for such a large-scale comic book event to come to his neck of the woods.
The East LA Comic-Con will focus on independent comic book makers located out of the Los Angeles area. The list of comic book developers currently includes artist Javier Hernandez from El Muerto, cosplay group We are the Greeks from East L.A, and Monkey Monsters Cosplay.
