|Miss World 2000 - Priyanka Chopra
|Priyanka Chopra, a name that you'll be hearing a lot of in the near future, brought to you right here before anywhere else!
Fans of the worldwide distinguished Miss World were recently dismayed to hear of the death of its creator. Eric Morley passed away recently at Princess Grace's Hospital in London. Eric had originally intended Miss World to be a one-time event, but when Miss Universe took off, he pronounced Miss World as an annual event, and so with his wife Julia, who has now taken over the reins, have put together such a extraordinarily successful event whose global figure even surpasses international events such as the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Miss World 2000 is the fiftieth anniversary of the Morley legacy that now attracts an annual audience of 2.5 billion people.
The host for Miss World 2000 needs little or no introduction. Hosting Miss World at the Dome, is a coming home for Jerry Springer. Born in London's East End in 1944, Jerry and his family emigrated to New York, where Jerry began his American dream.
For most of us, he's the best-loved talk show host on 'The Jerry Springer Show' whose first show premiered on 30th September 1991, now ten years later; it has turned into a run-away success attracting a global audience, Jerry Springer seemed like a natural host and the perfect front man for this year's Miss World 2000.
Jerry Springer was certainly in his element that evening. In the two-and-a-half hour sensation that followed, the contestants were first shown merrily frolicking on the beaches of Maldives, then dressed in evening gowns and also had to contend with Jerry endlessly chatting and teasing them all evening.
At one point, he asked a confused and nervous Miss Turkey, what she ate for Thanksgiving, she looked at him somewhat puzzled and the audience were in stitches. Another joke about the speed of the voting by the judges and comparing it with the US elections also had the audience on the edge of their seats.
95 of the world's most beautiful women took part in the world's most prestigious beauty pageant in London on 30th November 2000. The largest number, ever to compete in the history of Miss World.
The contestants had to participate in a photo shoot from the paradisiacal beaches of the Maldives, flaunt evening gowns on the night, and answer questions about their respective countries. Broadcast live from the Millennium Dome, London and presented by talk show host, Jerry Springer, Miss World 2000 was also being streamed live on the Internet.
18-year-old student, Priyanka Chopra- Miss India was finally crowned Miss World on Thursday 30th November at around 10:23pm, and won an amazing $100,000 (£70,000). A projected worldwide audience of nearly 2.5 billion people saw the previous Miss World, Yukta (1999) present her successor with the same crown she was crowned a little over a year ago.
Priyanka Chopra; favourite of the bookies, became the fifth Miss India to win the illustrious pageant in it's 50 year history, and the fourth in the past seven years. A feat, which is as remarkable as, it is amazing. Previous winners have included Yukta Mookhey (99'), Diana Hayden (97'), Aishwarya Rai (94') and Reita Faria (66').
In a record field of 95 women from around the planet, she beat Miss Italy and Miss Turkey to the coveted crown that will ensure her a year of instant fame.
Priyanka, who lists her passions as gospel singing, poetry, R & B and Salsa plans to be a clinical physiologist. A fan of traditional Indian music also, dancing is something which comes natural to the newly crowned Queen. Recently she joined classes for contemporary dance and also tries the North Indian Folk dance with great enthusiasm.
Poetry and writing short stories are also a favourite pastime of Priyanka Chopra; she keeps herself busy, being associated with the Pulse Polio Programme and the Aida Awareness Programme, where she has participated in street plays and group lectures. Her vision of paradise is when she is hiking and travelling, where 'I am one with God's beautiful creations'.
The Miss World winner, who told the audience she responds well under pressure impressed judges when she answered the question of which woman she admired most and why. Priyanka told the world she respected Mother Theresa for devoting her life to helping others.
Miss World, in the past has been condemned severely, recently when the contest was held in India, hundreds of women threatened to set themselves alight, to protest against the lack of respect the beauty pageant depicts. That particular contest saw more than 20,000 police officers armed with fire extinguishers in case the threats were carried out. However many of the contestants participating at the Dome have firms plans to train as doctors, lawyers and engineers.
This time however, only 40 or so feminists protested boisterously outside the Dome, chanting, 'Miss World go away, we want equal rights today'.
The judges for this year's competition were picked weeks before the event started, here's a brief run-down of them all.
